Statements by French Authorities

Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

France condemns the bloody violence in Egypt in the strongest possible terms, and calls for an immediate halt to the crackdown. Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius is taking this matter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and to our principal partners so that an international position may be urgently adopted to that effect.

The current situation will not be resolved by force. France calls on all the parties to reject spiraling clashes and to immediately begin a dialogue that includes all Egyptian political forces in order to find a democratic solution to this grave crisis. France reaffirms its immediate readiness to foster this dialogue.

Statement by the Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

France utterly deplores the violence which occurred in Cairo during the crowd-clearance operations. It extends its condolences to the bereaved. It is essential for this violence to stop and for calm to prevail. France calls on the parties to show the utmost restraint and cautions against disproportionate use of force.

As Foreign Minister M. Laurent Fabius highlighted a few days ago to the Egyptian authorities and his interlocutors in the region, the crisis can be resolved only through a peaceful solution, which requires everyone to give priority to dialogue and the quest for a compromise.
