14 January 2013 - Syria - International Criminal Court

Statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

At Switzerland’s initiative, a letter was today addressed to the UN Security Council asking it to refer the issue relating to the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court.

This letter - supported by France from the outset - has now been signed by 55 countries representing all regions of the world.

It is a further signal of the international community’s determination to combat the impunity of those responsible for the crimes committed in Syria.

It’s also an appeal to the Security Council members to make a commitment to that effect, while the scale and severity of the atrocities being committed, particularly by Bashar al-Assad’s regime, are reaching unprecedented levels.

The commission of inquiry has gathered enough evidence to show that war crimes and crimes against humanity may have been committed in Syria. France reaffirms its unwavering attachment to the International Criminal Court’s role and hopes that the Syrian issue can be brought before it so that justice can be done.
