14 November 2012 - Israel/Gaza

Statement by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman, Philippe Lalliot

France is extremely concerned at the deterioration in the situation in Gaza and in southern Israel.

It urges the parties to refrain from any escalation of violence, for which the Israeli and Palestinian civilian populations would inevitably pay the price.

Our embassy in Israel is in contact with the security officials as well as with our honorary consuls in Beersheba and Ashdod in order to ensure the safety of 6,000 French citizens living in southern Israel, less than 40km from the Gaza Strip. We urge our fellow citizens to follow the Israeli authorities’ safety precautions. Our consular office in Gaza and the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem are also in touch with the French community in Gaza.
