Today marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
The resolution relates to the protection of women against violence, the respect of their fundamental rights and the participation of women in the management of situations of conflict and in reconstruction. It signals the awareness by the international community of two things:
women are the targets of massive violence in periods of armed conflict and their protection must be increased;
the participation of women has a major impact on stabilization and reconstruction in the post-crisis period.
This anniversary provides an opportunity for the Security Council to meet in order review the actions taken by the international community regarding this issue.
