8 July 2013 - Egypt / Violences

Statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

France condemns the violence that has taken place in Egypt in recent days, whatever its origins. It calls on all parties to demonstrate restraint, avoid any escalation of violence and preserve the sense of national unity. Full light must be shed on the violence which left more than 50 people dead this morning. France takes note of the creation of a commission of inquiry and expresses its solidarity with the families of the victims and the injured.

It reaffirms the importance of continuing the democratic transition with due respect for human rights and pluralism, while ensuring that all political forces are included, as well as its attachment to the right to demonstrate peacefully.

The minister reaffirmed these principles to Mr. Kamel Amr, Egypt´s Minister of Foreign Affairs, with whom he spoke this afternoon; he also reaffirmed to him France´s solidarity with the Egyptian people.
