Continued crackdown in Syria - Statement by Mr Alain Juppé, Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, 27 April 2011

The continued crackdown in Syria is, as President Sarkozy underlined, unacceptable.

France is mobilized to ensure that an immediate end be put to this violence and that the Syrian authorities find a peaceful solution to the aspirations of their people.

We are taking action in four directions:

— by unequivocally expressing our condemnation to the Syrian authorities: Syria’s ambassador in Paris was summoned this morning to that end.

— by working at the Security Council with a view towards adopting a statement condemning the crackdown and calling for an end to the violence

— by examining with our European Union partners the possibility of sanctions

— by arguing in favor of strong action at the Human Rights Council.
