Iran/IAEA Adoption by the Board of Governors of a new resolution on Iran - Statement by Alain Juppé, ministre d’État, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, 18 November 2011

I welcome the adoption in Vienna today of a firm resolution on Iran, which I strongly appealed for on 9 November, shortly after the IAEA Director General, Mr Amano, published his detailed report on Iran’s militarization activities.

The adoption of this resolution – the 11th since 2003 – demonstrates once again the international community’s unity and determination on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Taking note of the report on Iran issued by the Director General, the IAEA Board of Governors sends an extremely firm message to the Iranian authorities.

The Board expresses its “deep and increasing concern” about the unresolved issues regarding the Iranian nuclear programme, including those “which need to be clarified to exclude the existence of possible military dimensions”.

It emphasizes that it is “essential” for Iran to engage in genuine and “urgent” cooperation with the IAEA, giving the Agency “access to all relevant information, documentation, sites, material, and personnel in Iran”.

The Board urges Iran to “comply fully and without delay with its obligations under relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council” and meet the requirements of the Board of Governors regarding, in particular, the application of the modified Code 3.1 and the implementation and ratification of the Additional Protocol.

It sets a clear deadline for Iran, asking the Agency’s Director General to prepare for it a report on the implementation of the resolution by its next meeting, on 5 March 2012.

Along with her partners, France urges Iran to heed the message addressed to her by the IAEA. If Iran refuses to comply with her international obligations – very clearly reiterated again today – we shall, along with all our partners, adopt sanctions on an unprecedented scale.
