Lebanon - Attack on UNIFIL

Statement by Alain Juppé, Ministre d’Etat, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs

(Paris, 9 December 2011)

I utterly condemn the cowardly attack this morning on UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), which wounded five French blue helmets and a civilian in Tyre, southern Lebanon.

We appreciate the messages of solidarity expressed in Lebanon, particularly by the President and the Prime Minister.

France asks for full light to be shed on this attack. We call on the Lebanese authorities to do everything to ensure those responsible are brought to trial.

We will not tolerate this kind of attack on the security of the military personnel deployed in a United Nations peacekeeping operation, who are acting in accordance with UNSCRs 1701 and 1937 and at the Lebanese government’s request.

We recall that UNIFIL soldiers’ security and freedom of movement must be guaranteed. Everything must be done to prevent such attacks.

In this respect, I note that the Lebanese Prime Minister, who had already reinforced Lebanon’s security arrangements, has pledged to take immediate measures.

UNIFIL makes an essential contribution to peace and security in Lebanon in an unstable regional environment. France is determined to continue her engagement in UNIFIL and will not be intimidated by such despicable acts. France reiterates her commitment to Lebanon’s security, stability, independence and sovereignty./.
