Libya – Attack on the convoy carrying the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative

Statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs
Paris, 10 April 2012

France condemns the attack which targeted the convoy carrying the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Mr. Ian Martin, yesterday in Benghazi in Libya.

France reaffirms its full support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) which, under UNSCR 2040, plays a key role in supporting the Libyan authorities in the transition process that has been under way since the fall of the Qaddafi regime.

France also reaffirms its support for the National Transitional Council and the interim government in their efforts to re-establish the rule of law throughout the territory.

We reaffirm that the UN is intervening at the request of the Libyan authorities. We would like these authorities to take all necessary measures to shed light on the circumstances of this attack and to guarantee the safety of UNSMIL operations.
