I have just learned of the Serbian authorities’ arrest of Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander, who has been indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
My immediate thoughts are for the families of the victims. This arrest brings an end to 16 years of impunity. It will finally allow justice to be served and will contribute to the reconciliation of the western Balkans, which has France has always called for.
France hopes that he will be transferred to the ICTY as quickly as possible and expresses its support for the crucial work the court is carrying out in the service of international justice.
