Syria - Escalation of violence

Statement by the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign and European affairs

Paris, 28 January 2012

France vigorously condemns the dramatic escalation of violence in Syria, which has led the Arab League to suspend its observers’ mission in Syria. Dozens of Syrian civilians have been killed in recent days by the savage repression conducted by the Syrian regime, notably by massive military operations against opponents’ neighborhoods in several cities. Those responsible for these barbarous acts must answer to their crimes.

France calls on the international community to take its responsibilities to protect the Syrian, in the first place at the Security Council. Everything must be done to reach swift agreement on the draft resolution circulated Friday in New York on behalf of the Arab group. This text aims to provide a strong support by the international community to the initiative of the Arab League in all its dimensions. We are working closely on the matter with our partners in the Security Council and with the Arab League and its members. Mr. Alain Juppé, ministre d’Etat, sent a message yesterday to his Russian counterpart, Mr. Lavrov, to underscore the importance of constructive cooperation between France and Russia on this issue.

The Security Council must, without delay, take decisions to the extent of the tragedy that is presently taking place in Syria.
