On 9 June, the IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution on Syria, demanding that it be referred to the Security Council, in response to the conclusions of the IAEA’s most recent report.
By covertly building a nuclear reactor at the Deir Alzour site, Syria has clearly violated its international obligations.
Despite the Agency’s repeated demands, Damascus has not shown any concrete signs of cooperation regarding its activities in this field for nearly three years.
It was therefore necessary for the IAEA governing body to issue a strong response and to reaffirm that Syria must comply with its international obligations. It’s now the responsibility of the UN Security Council to draw all of the political consequences.
