Syria – Violence

Statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, 21 December 2011

A massacre on an unprecedented scale took place in Syria on Tuesday, leaving almost 120 people dead. Everything possible must be done in order to put an end to this cycle of violence into which Bashar al-Assad is dragging his people a little further each day.

In these tragic circumstances, France calls for even greater mobilization on the part of the international community. The UN Security Council must urgently voice its opinion through a strong resolution demanding an end to the crackdown.

It is crucial that Damascus accept the immediate deployment of Arab League observers and that it allow them to verify the full implementation of the 4 components of the Arab plan:

— an end to the crackdown

— the release of all political prisoners

— the army’s return to barracks

— access to the Syrian territory by the international media.

Damascus must respond without further delay or stalling tactics to all of these points contained within the action plan.

We urge Russia to accelerate the pace of negotiations at the Security Council on its draft resolution.
