Syria – Violence in Hama and Idleb

Statement by the Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs

Paris, 26 January 2012

France is deeply concerned by the deterioration in the situation in Hama, where the Syrian regime’s security forces have launched a major offensive.

France utterly condemns the killing of Abd-al-Razzaq Jbeiro, Secretary General of the Syrian Red Crescent and head of its branch in Idleb.

The Syrian authorities have a responsibility to ensure the security of humanitarian workers so that they can fulfill their mission and help the civilian populations.

Faced with the Syrian regime’s bloody and relentless crackdown, the international community must assume its responsibilities by adopting a Security Council resolution condemning in particular the violence perpetrated by the Damascus regime against the Syrian people.

France fully supports all aspects of the Arab League plan to resolve the crisis, including the political component of the plan. We would like a Security Council meeting to take place as swiftly as possible in order to hear the Arab League’s views and to bring the international community together in support of its initiative.
