The United Nations has been present in Kosovo since 1999 through the United Nations Interim Administration Mission. Kosovo is the subject of a quarterly review at the Security Council. The Security Council also periodically examines the situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina, since it authorizes the deployment of the European Force on the ground. The United Nations is also involved in the Balkans through the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, a subsidiary organ of the Security Council, tasked with the prosecution of war criminals.
A United Nations force has been deployed in Cyprus since 1964. The United Nations withdrew its observation mission in Georgia in 2009 but remains involved in the negotiations within the Geneva process.
